Opening of SAUTER new building

25th March 2010

SAUTER opens the first MINERGIE-compliant industrial building in north-west Switzerland

SAUTER will today celebrate the opening of its new building at the company's headquarters in the Surinam district of Basle together with representatives from the worlds of politics and commerce. It is the first new industrial building in north-west Switzerland to carry the MINERGIE quality seal. SAUTER makes use of renewable energy sources to create the energy required by the new building. CO2 emissions at the company's headquarters have been reduced by more than a half over the last ten years. The efficient use of energy in the new building played a major role in this achievement.

The new industrial building on the SAUTER premises is a shining example of how energy can be saved and emissions can be cut thanks to innovative solutions. The multi-functional building provides space for the production, logistics and administration departments, and will be officially opened to coincide with the company's 100th anniversary. SAUTER is an expert on energy-efficient building solutions and will use its new, low-energy building to demonstrate to customers just how smoothly this type of construction can be operated, whilst increasing comfort and convenience for the user.

"We are leaders in the development of innovative solutions that save energy and reduce CO2 emissions. Our activities actively contribute towards climate protection", says Bertram Schmitz, CEO of SAUTER, adding: "We are proud that our own building uses energy very sparingly and, therefore, helps to protect the environment. We have reduced the level of CO2 emissions on our premises by around 55 per cent over the past ten years. We want to demonstrate to our customers what innovative solutions can achieve. The energy concept of our new building has contributed significantly to this success. Our new building is the first industrial building in north-west Switzerland to carry the MINERGIE quality seal."

SAUTER uses renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic in its new building. A subterranean ground water course runs beneath the company's premises. Its water is used to cool and heat the new building. A new solar power system with an output of 58.5 kWp and an anticipated yield of 52,083 kWh will be installed on the roof of the new building and taken into operation by summer 2010. The building's complex technology is controlled by SAUTER EY-modulo 5, the innovative building management system for ideal energy flows. The building does not need any fossil energy unless the outside temperature is -5°C or below.

Mr. Christoph Brutschin, a minister in the cantonal government of Basle, who presented the MINERGIE certificate to SAUTER at the opening ceremony, said: "SAUTER is an important employer for this region. The company is engaged in research and development at its headquarters here in Basle where it manufactures quality Swiss products for the international building management market. I am pleased to attend the opening ceremony and to present the MINERGIE certificate to SAUTER in recognition of its intelligent new building. I am convinced that the MINERGIE standard of this industrial building and SAUTER's energy-efficient solutions will inspire other companies in the region to implement low-energy standards in their own buildings."

The demands faced by the new building were high: areas with different requirement profiles, such as production, logistics and administration, had to be united under one roof. The challenge was mastered with excellent results thanks to the outstanding collaboration between the SAUTER project team, the team of architects and the local authorities.

The new building was designed by the renowned firm of Vischer Architekten in Basle. Architect Lukas Stutz reports: "The new SAUTER building was an exciting and demanding project. SAUTER wanted not merely a new building, but rather a multi-functional construction that united different areas of utilisation such as offices, production bays and warehousing facilities under one roof. Together with SAUTER, we have been able to set a milestone for sustainable construction in the Basle region."

The new concrete and steel construction covers an area of 8,600 square metres. It comprises nineteen offices, eight conference rooms, a workshop, a packaging, logistics and shipping centre, an assembly centre, sales administration, a server room and various technical facilities. Twenty months passed between the ground-breaking ceremony and commissioning the building. During this time, an impressive 890 tonnes of steel and 7,000 cubic metres (or 16,100 tonnes) of concrete flowed into the construction.

SAUTER employs around 500 staff working in fields of research and development, production, logistics, marketing and administration at the company's headquarters in Basle. SAUTER attaches great importance to advancing creative young talent. 48 apprentices are currently undergoing training at SAUTER. The company has a long history of apprenticeships – a total of 1,269 young people have completed their professional training in many different fields at SAUTER since 1916.

SAUTER has consistently developed its strengths over an entire century. The company works constantly on improving its technologies. In view of global warming, SAUTER is integrating alternative energy sources – such as photovoltaic systems, hydro-electrical power and geothermal power – into its building management concepts. Green buildings and low-energy houses are further areas where SAUTER will introduce new cutting-edge technologies.
