LEED platinum

30th November 2010

SAUTER proud of the LEED platinum award for the new administration centre of the German Stock Exchange

'The Cube', the new administration centre of the German Stock Exchange at Eschborn, near Frankfurt, is the first office block in Germany to be awarded the LEED platinum certificate for sustainable, environmentally-friendly buildings. SAUTER, with its innovative energy-management systems, its energy-efficient room automation and air-conditioning control systems, made a major contribution to this success.

Completed at the end of July and already awarded a prize at the end of October, the new building at the German Stock Exchange is distinguished not just by its modern architecture, but in particular by its use of the very latest technology for minimising energy consumption. The admin centre – which stands at 90 metres in height and has 21 storeys, providing 53,000 square metres of floor space – recently received the platinum certificate, the highest category of the internationally-renowned LEED system of classification for environment-friendly, low-resource and sustainable construction.

The German Stock Exchange paid particular attention to the environment-friendliness and sustainability of its new building during the planning, building and operating phases. For instance, energy-saving heat recovery systems are employed, electricity is generated using combined heat and power, and good use is made of solar energy. The planning concept, which strived for economical and ecological efficiency, was drawn up by Ebert consulting engineers and makes full use of SAUTER's innovative building management solutions. Therefore, SAUTER technology – energy management systems, room automation and air-conditioning systems – is much in evidence in the new Stock Exchange.

"At SAUTER, the emphasis is on sustainable energy efficiency. It is our intention to promote the use of renewable energies in the building management systems of the future. This is why we are very pleased that the German Stock Exchange has received the LEED platinum certificate – an award of which anyone can be rightfully proud", explained Bertram Schmitz, SAUTER's CEO.

SAUTER building automation systems have a marked influence on energy consumption and indoor air quality and comfort, which are important LEED criteria. SAUTER's modular EY-modulo 5 range won the award for best system at the GebäudeEffizienz trade fair in Frankfurt in 2009. A pleasant, energy-optimised indoor climate creates an efficient working environment. In addition, office layouts have to be flexible – and it should be possible to re-arrange the layout at any time in accordance with the needs of the department – so SAUTER's room controllers make allowances for this. The indoor air temperature is regulated by using radiant panels or chilled beams in conjunction with the latest generation of SAUTER actuators. These, incidentally, are notable for being fast and simple to fit during the installation phase, e.g. the power cables can be pre-assembled. SAUTER controls and regulates the heat generators and the chillers, and also takes the solar effects of the weather conditions into account. For example, the predictive energy management system includes, in particular, the weather forecast. SAUTER has incorporated the forecasts for the next 48 hours into the control strategy. The whole installation is controlled using the SAUTER novaPro Open management system. All the specialist systems (i.e. heating, lighting, ventilation etc.) can be monitored and, if necessary, adjusted from a control centre. Monitoring can also be carried out remotely using a mobile phone and a web browser. Last but not least, SAUTER EMS (Energy Management Solution) provides the ability to visualise all the energy flows within the building and compare the consumption levels with historical data and with external benchmarks. Therefore, it is easy to keep a close eye on the energy consumption and, if need be, to make the necessary adjustments. SAUTER EMS is part of ECO10, a ten-point fitness plan for energy-efficient buildings, which won the GebäudeEffizienz Award 2010 in the category 'Best Energy Service' at this year's GebäudeEffizienz convention in Frankfurt.

LEEDTM stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and has become the most successful voluntary system of certification for sustainable buildings in the world since its inception by the US Green Building Council in 1998. It lays down a series of standards for environmentally-friendly, low-resource and sustainable construction. By March 2010, over five thousand buildings had been certified in about seventy different countries, and, every day, new LEEDTM projects worth a total of about €300 million are being registered. LEEDTM assesses sustainability based on six main criteria: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation and planning process.
